Client testimonial
He excavated the property rear
"We contacted Brian Fowler of Able Contractors to excavate the property rear of ours as part of landscaping work we were undertaking.

We were very pleased with Brian's work. He took great care in work against our house as access was difficult, and he laid protective boards to protect a paved driveway.

We would not hesitate to use Brian and Able Contractors in similar work."

The size of the diggers purchased was carefully directed at the residential and light commercial market, in that access and room to maneuver are the critical considerations.

The 4.5 tonne Komatsu is only 2 metres wide, making it suitable for access down the side of and around to the rear of most houses. The 1.5 tonne Takeuchi is 1 metre wide and was purchased as a good balance of power, reach, and compact size.

Both diggers have their own dedicated breakers which make them ideal for digging out and breaking hard rock in particular. The wide range of bucket sizes and design of the cutting teeth, with the option of using the breakers make them well suited to basement dig-outs.

The Takeuchi for example has no less than 5 buckets of various sizes including the standard and an oversize load out bucket.

This commitment by Able Contractors to maximising the utility and efficiency of its machines makes basement dig outs of Wellington greywacke more efficient as the correct bucket can be matched to the hardness of the rock.

Harder rock requires a smaller bucket, - as less contact area means more breakout force.

Check out images of one example of a basement dig out, however it was of some scale and of a number done in the Wellington region, it was more complex than most.

The power clamp on the Komatsu enabled the steel floor support USBs to be threaded through the purpose sawn foundation penetrations from one side. Given the size and weight of the beams it is difficult to imagine any other contractor managing this operation without expensive and time consuming propping.

Residential retaining walls are generally built using the now common timber post and plank method of construction. The alternative reinforced and mass concrete concrete method, is now much less prevalent, as it is more time consuming and expensive to build, both in terms of time and materials.
